With over 25 years in practice, Dr. Deland has considerable experience as well as using the most up to date techniques.

Dr. Deland earned his Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude from Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He went on to a General Surgical Residency at St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York, and a Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Beth Israel Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Dr. Deland was selected as Chief Resident in Orthopaedics at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Deland continued his training with a number of prestigious fellowships. He completed a Biomechanics Fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital; an AO Fellowship in Berne, Switzerland and Seattle, Washington; a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital; and a Foot and Ankle Fellowship at St. Luke's – Roosevelt Hospital.

Chief Emeritus of the Foot and Ankle Service and Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Dr. Deland also maintains a position as a Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College. He is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Deland is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, American Medical Association and American Orthopedic Association. He has been named to the Best Doctors in America list and the Best Doctors in New York by New York Magazine.

An active researcher, Dr. Deland’s major field of study is Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction or Flatfoot Deformity. His additional interests are concentrated on total ankle replacements, Osteochondral and Arthritic lesions of the ankle, hindfoot and Achilles tendon problems and forefoot problems such as bunions, neuromas and lesser toe deformities.

Dr. Deland is the author of numerous articles in professional, peer-reviewed journals as well as book chapters and abstracts. Additionally, Dr. Deland is a frequent presenter at major national and international medical conferences.

Research

Dr. Deland is committed to improving patient outcomes in Foot & Ankle surgery. With a passion for research and innovating in the field, Dr. Deland has improved techniques for reconstructing Adult Acquired Flatfoot, percutaneous repairs of Achilles Tendons, and implementing total ankle replacements.
